Target 15 August

Scene 1 – A Dark Room
The episode begins in a dark room, where we see the silhouette of a man hunched over a table, fiddling with an array of bomb-making equipment spread out upon its top. He receives a call from his boss and gleefully informs them that the city shall be ravaged by a gargantuan blast on the 15th of August. The boss seems concerned about the CID; the man arrogantly says that he’s already planned to have the CID cops KIA when they try to stop him. He repeats that the day shall prove to be a dark one for the country.

Scene 2 – The CID Bureau
In the CID Bureau, Fredericks tells Rajat that he’s planning to take leave the next day – the 15th of August – and take his wife on a tour. ACP sir arrives and refuses to grant him permission for the same, saying that they need to be extra vigilant for the country’s safety on that day; Freddy agrees. At this point, Purvi enters and introduces a lady, Jytosana, and her daughter Sonia to ACP sir. Sonia asks ACP sir if he recognizes her. When he’s unable to, they remind him that he’d saved her five years ago from a certain school picnic kidnapping. Sonia presents him with an invitation card for her school’s Independence Day function and insists him to come for at least some time. ACP sir agrees, and they leave. Soon after this, a guy named Ronit enters and claims that he works as a crime reporter in Daily Times.
He explains that he’d shortly received a threatening call about a terrible attack imminent the next day. The team is alerted and deduces that it must be a terrorist plot; Purvi asks if the number’s been stored in his mobile. Ronit provides it; ACP sir instructs her to look up the complete call records of the number. Ronit adds that he recorded the entire conversation on his mobile. Rajat connects the phone to their computer and plays the recording, in which the caller arrogantly announces that thousands of innocents shall die on the upcoming Independence Day, framing it in a dark shayari – “purab se paschim tak aisa sailaab (?) aayega, do-chaar-chay-aath nahin saikdo sawaariyon ko duba le jaageya.” . Fredericks wonders why a deadly terrorist would speak in riddles; Rajat says that it could be some dirty joke. ACP sir is unconvinced and tells him to replay the recording. This time, they make out someone shouting “Nathu ki kulfi” in the background. Purvi recalls that one such guy used to have his stall outside her college. ACP sir instructs them to go meet this dude.

Scene 3 – A Road
Sachin and Rajat meet Nathu and ask if he saw any shifty-looking character in the vicinity the previous day; the guy can’t recall anything owing to the huge crowd. Sachin asks him where he’d set up his thela then; he takes them to the spot and Rajat spots a single closed door amid the shops behind them. Nathu says that it belongs to one Gopal ji and has been closed since a long time. They ask him to fetch Gopal, while they approach the door and realize that it’s unlocked. Inside, they find lots of machinery and other goods; Sachin wonders why nobody bothered to lock the place considering its contents. Eventually, they come across a dead man with a fresh gunshot wound upon his chest. Rajat checks his wallet and recovers a driving license, revealing that he’s one Ramesh.

Scene 4 – The Forensic Lab
In the forensic lab, Dr. Salunkhe is seen extracting some white powder from under the fingernails of Ramesh’s corpse, when he then asks Dr. Tarika to examine. At this point, ACP sir and the others enter the lab. As Dr. Salunkhe shows them the powder, Tarika finishes her analysis and concludes that it is ammonium nitrate, a compound used in the preparation of fertilizers… and powerful bombs.

Scene 5 – The CID Bureau
The team is seen analyzing the terrorist’s call recording in the CID Bureau. ACP sir says that the shayari could be some sort of coded clue and, re-examining it, points out how the caller deliberately called the victims “sawaariyan”. Purvi says that it could be some VIPs moving in a car, but ACP sir points out that the terrorist clearly had mass murder on his mind and says that the targets could be anything from public buses to trains. Fredericks wonders how they’re gonna identify and rescue the same; ACP sir singles out the digits/number in the shayari – 2468 – and says that it could be another clue.
Rajat says that the absence of alphabets seem to rule out chances of it being the registration number of a vehicle. Purvi points out that it could be the route number of a bus or train; ACP sir agrees and asks her to find out about it. Rajat wonders why the schemer is alerting them of his dark plans in advance; ACP sir says that it’s an open challenge for them to save their country if they can. Purvi finds out that 2468 is the number of a train moving from Haryana to Bangalore. ACP sir notes that its route is from North to South, unlike East to West as the shayari indicates, and declines. Fredericks comes up and reveals that 2468 is also the number of the bus route leading from Andheri East to Andheri West. ACP sir concludes that this must be it.

Scene 6 – Route 2468
The team is seen moving along the said route in the Qualis. Fredericks asks Abhijeet sir if the caller had deliberately trying to mislead them, pointing out that the two buses they already checked along the route were safe. Abhijeet sir says that they can’t afford to take risks and must proceed as planned. Shortly, they come across another bus and stop it. Instructing the passengers to dismount along with their luggage, they proceed to search every nook and cranny of the vehicle. Eventually, Fredericks discovers an umbrella lying underneath one of the seats. Abhijeet sir carefully picks it up, noting that it’s unusually heavy. He opens it and sees a timed bomb planted right below the hood, with the wiring stashed at the foot of the handle. He asks Purvi for pliers and starts working on the thing, eventually cutting the right wire and neutralizing the bomb; they’re all relieved. Pointing out that the bomb was only 1.5 minutes away from detonation when they found it, Abhijeet sir construes that the guy who planted it must’ve dismounted the bus a long while back.

Scene 7 – The CID Bureau
In the CID Bureau, Sachin wonders why the guy planted such a weak bomb in the bus; Abhijeet sir says that it could be a decoy to divert attention from the actual, highly destructive blast they’re planning to unleash elsewhere. At this point, Ronit enters again and informs him that the caller contacted him again with a request – to print his given message in the next edition of the Daily Times, failing which he’d detonate another powerful bomb in the city. He hands Abhijeet sir the message he’d written down – orders for nobody to exit their homes on the 15th of August, and for all celebratory ceremonies to be cancelled, warning of dire consequences otherwise.
There’s a second shayari – “leheron se darker nauka paar nahin hoti, himmat karne waalon ki haar nahin hoti”. Ronit adds that the guy called using the same number as before; Abhijeet sir is surprised that he didn’t destroy it yet. He asks Purvi about the same, who reveals that the registration details of the number are fraudulent, but the number was tracked and it’s been found out that the guy usually called from somewhere around the Veera Desai Road, between 4-5 PM. Abhijeet sir instructs her to track down his exact location, and re-reads the poetic line in the caller’s message. Sachin recalls that the line was first used by the freedom fighter Diwakar ji. Abhijeet sir thinks, and points out that there’s a statue of Diwakar ji at the Sarojini Nagar, near a large marketplace. He wonders if that’s the next target.

Scene 8 – The Veera Desai Road
Purvi is seen sitting alone in the Qualis at the Veera Desai Road. Noting that it’s 4 PM, she construes that the caller must’ve switched on his phone and decides to call him. She dials and poses as a promotional call agent; the guy curtly declines and disconnects. She tracks the number using an iPhone app and notes that he’s somewhere near the Veera Desai road, but the exact location remains unknown. Recalling the sounds of cutlery and music in the background of the call, she deduces that he must be in a restaurant and looks up for more info on the app, soon finding out that there’s some Chinese restaurant nearby. She drives to the same.

Scene 9 – Sarojini Nagar
Abhi-Daya and the others are seen driving along Sarojini Nagar in the Qualis. Nikhil points out that the market would be closed on that day and wonders why the dude chose it as a target then. Abhijeet says that they could possibly have been deceived, though he maintains that “Sarojini Nagar” is a key clue. Since Nikhil is a resident of that area, he asks him to name areas which feature high crowd density. Nikhil says that there’s one LSG Commercial Hub (?), a large office complex there. Daya sir says that the high security at the complex in question make it an unlikely target. He remembers that there’s a joggers’ park named the Sarojini Park in the area as well, and wonders if that’s where the bomb has been planted.

Scene 10 – The Veera Desai Road
Back at the Veera Desai Road, Purvi calls the guy using another SIM card, posing as a call agent again, and he soon disconnects brusquely. She examines the ambience in the background again and concludes that he’s definitely in a restaurant, but additionally notes the sound of a coffee machine in there this time.

Scene 11 – Sarojini Park
We see a shady-looking black suitcase concealed in a thicket at the Sarojini Park. Abhi-Daya and the others arrive at the park and evacuate it before proceeding to thoroughly search the place, including all the bags and containers nearby. Abhijeet hears the ticking of the bomb’s timer and manages to follow it to the suitcase. He calls out to Daya sir as he retrieves it, and the latter carefully opens it to see that they’ve only 58 seconds to go until the blast. Vineet suggests calling for a bomb squad, but Daya sir says that they’re short of time. They note that while the bomb seems to be of low intensity, it could still result in over a dozen casualties if detonated. They study the circuit and attempt to neutralize the bomb, unsuccessfully cutting two different wires. With only 9 seconds left, Daya sir decides that the risk is far too great and proceeds to press the bomb into a trash bin with some vegetation. He sprints just as it goes off in a large cloud of mushroom fire.

Scene 12 – Restaurant
Purvi enters the restaurant, spots the coffee machine she’d heard and proceeds to dial the number again. A guy sitting in the corner (with his back to the camera) simultaneously picks up his as it rings. Disconnecting, she walks up and drawing her gun, coolly informs that he’s under arrest. As he turns around (still unseen by the viewer), she’s surprised to discover who he is. At this point, an unseen person sneaks up from behind and holds her at gunpoint as well.

Scene 13 – Sarojini Park
At the park, Abhijeet sir asks the crowd if any of them saw somebody loitering around the thicket where the suitcase had been planted. One of them singles out a young man regarding this, who angrily denies any involvement. Scrutinizing his attire, Daya sir notes that he doesn’t look like a jogger and demands for his purpose of being there. He claims that he’d been snapping photos of his girlfriend; Abhijeet sir asks for his mobile to examine the same. He examines the background of one of the photos which had been taken a mere 2 minutes before their arrival, and notes that there’s no suitcase to be seen in the thicket, deducing that the culprit had stashed it only shortly before their arrival and made his getaway. Vineet says that they could nab the guy if they managed to find out who had exited the park during those couple of minutes. Abhijeet sir asks the crowd for the same, and one of them comes forward claiming that he’d seen Manish – a petty thief and pickpocket – fleeing back then.

Scene 14 – Manish’s House
Abhijeet sir and Fredericks are seen confronting Manish, who claims that he’d nicked the suitcase from some dude at the Sarojini Market, who had started following him since. Terrified, he went on to dump the suitcase in the thicket at the park before fleeing the scene. Abhijeet sir decides to take him to the bureau to have this other fella sketched.

Scene 15 – A Deserted Road
Daya sir, Vineet and Nikhil are seen hot on the trail of Purvi’s abductors in the Qualis. Working on the GPRS, Nikhil notes that they seem to have turned right from the St. Michael road; Daya sir says that they could be trying to move her out of the city, but that’s no piece of cake ‘cos they’ve already alerted all the checkpoints at the outskirts. Nikhil notes that the enemy car seems to have slowed down and turned left back towards the city, about 2 kilometres ahead of them. Soon afterwards, the car’s signal moves towards theirs and stops at the main road, about half a kilometre away from them. Daya sir moves the car to the said spot – where the signal indicates presence of Purvi’s mobile. They dismount, but find the area completely deserted. Daya sir asks Vineet to call Purvi; they follow the ringtone and find the phone in some foliage to the side of the road. Daya sir says that the crooks must’ve disposed of it after realizing that Purvi’s teammates were tracking them down with its help. Nikhil says that they could be hiding somewhere in the forest; Daya sir worries that Purvi’s life is in danger.

Scene 16 – The CID Bureau
In the CID Bureau, Manish is seen helping the artist sketch the suitcase dude. ACP sir enters and asks about the progress in the search for Purvi. Rajat explains the same while Fredericks informs him that the last call she made was to the culprit; he’s still working on the rest of the record. At this point, the sketch is finished – the guy turns out to be none other than Ronit. ACP sir concludes that he’d been deliberately deceiving them, using the low-intensity bombs as decoys while planting the real deal somewhere else. Fredericks finds out that the last name Purvi had typed on her mobile was “Marwe”, at around 6:00 o’ clock – around the same time that Daya sir had managed to pin down her location. ACP sir construes that she must’ve deliberately done it and then dropped the mobile someplace away from where she was being held. He praises her efforts and says that they must start working on it at once.

Scene 17 – The Deserted Road
Daya sir and the others are seen moving further along the road. Up ahead, they come across Ronit’s car parked along the road. They dismount and find it empty. Daya sir wonders what he was doing out here in the middle of nowhere. He spots a small graveyard on the other side of the road, and suddenly Nikhil realizes the terrible implications of the same. They approach it, and soon Nikhil finds Purvi’s watch lying upon one of the graves. Daya sir instructs him to fetch shovels at once; they start digging and extract a coffin buried underneath, inside which lies a nearly asphyxiated Ronit.
They take him to safety and, after reviving him, ask for Purvi’s whereabouts. He points towards the second grave; they promptly dig up a second coffin there and find Purvi in a worse condition, attempting to pry open the lid with a jackknife. Daya sir asks Nikhil to have her taken to the hospital, before questioning Ronit about their assailant. He reveals that it was one international criminal named Lakhia, who’d kidnapped his wife and forced him to play along in his dirty game. He adds that all he knows is about a bomb having been planted in one Nimal Bhawan. Vineet points out that that’s where the Independence Day function of Sonia’s school was going to be held. Daya sir realizes that the lives of several innocent kinds are in peril.

Scene 18 – The Nirmal Bhawan
Abhijeet sir and Fredericks outside the Nirmal Bhawan, which seems to be vacant; the former wonders why the rogues planted a bomb in there. They decide to check it out anyway; as they approach it, sounds of whimpering are heard from within. They enter the auditorium and find Sonia and her mother chained to a large timed bomb on the stage. As they rush towards them, somebody closes and locks the door from outside. Abhijeet sir sees an LED TV upon the wall, which shows Lakhia cackling maniacally and taunting them. He warns the thug of fatal consequences like his equally diabolic brother; Lakhia gleefully holds up the detonator to the bomb and informs him that they’ve got a mere ten minutes to go, before turning off the signal. Fredericks wonders how they’re gonna escape, since all exits are locked. Abhijeet sir points out that it’s still possible for outsiders to enter the building, and proceeds to send a message using his mobile.

Scene 19 – The Qualis
In the Qualis, Daya sir receives an MMS from Abhijeet sir, with a snapshot of Lakhia’s cocky threat in the Bhawan’s TV. He examines the photo and notices the gate of one Hotel Grand View in the background. Vineet informs him that they’ve reached the Nirmal Bhawan, but Daya sir asks him to go down another route, opining that Abhijeet sir wants them to go after Lakhia – who’s obviously somewhere up ahead of the hotel in the photo.

Scene 20 – The Nirmal Bhawan
Back in the Nirmal Bhawan, Abhijeet asks the hostages how they got captured, since the function was supposed to be held in the evening. The mother explains that somebody deceitfully summoned them to the place early under the claim of some rehearsals being held. He attempts to calm them and assures that everything will be fine.

Scene 21 – Lakhia’s Den/The Nirmal Bhawan
Daya sir and Vineet infiltrate Lakhia’s hideout and swiftly dispatch his minions before entering the building and splitting up. Lakhia spots them on his security cam feeds and gestures at one of his bodyguards to go after them. The guy sneaks up and holds Vineet at gunpoint just as the cop enters the room. Daya sir enters and is held by a second guard as well. Lakhia greets them smugly; Daya sir lambasts him, but the terrorist holds up the detonator and threatens to kill the hostages, demanding them to surrender their weapons at once. Daya sir crouches to put down his gun, and spots a tire lying to his side. He kicks it at Lakhia and knocks the detonator out of his hand, before seizing the guard’s gun and shooting his boss in the leg.
The two cops proceed to knock out the guards before approaching Lakhia; Daya sir retrieves the detonator and orders him to explain how to diffuse the bomb. Lakhia simply snarls that they’ve got merely two minutes left, before passing out unconscious. Daya sir uses his surveillance console to contact Abhijeet sir and explains the situation to him. Abhijeet sir tells him to hurry as they’ve only got 1.5 minutes left. Daya sir pushes one of the buttons on the detonator, to no avail. He finds an illustration of the bomb circuit lying on the table nearby; Abhijeet sir instructs him to study the wiring. Time rapidly runs out and tension mounts as Daya sir and Vineet study the diagram and finally tell Abhijeet sir to cut the yellow wire. With only three seconds left, Abhijeet sir cuts the wire… and successfully neutralizes the bomb, to everyone’s relief. The hostages are rescued, and Sonia gratefully shakes hands with Abhijeet sir, thanking them for saving her a second time.
