Silent comedy is an art – Jagat Rawat

A silent comedy may be tough to execute for many actors but is not much of a challenge for a theatre actor like Jagat Rawat who has also done mime. The actor plays Jay Ahuja on SAB TV’s Gutur Gu 2 (Fireworks Productions). He informed us, “About three or four actors from our show hail from theatre.”

Speaking on his role the actor said, “I replaced Jaydutt Vyas who was playing the father in the second season. So I am trying to imitate what he did.”

When we asked if he improvises in the series he replied, “We improvise a lot but the basic brief is given by the director. Then all the artistes get together, think and discuss which leads to improvisations.”

Like his co-stars he feels that a show bereft of dialogues is a challenge. “It is a relief that you do not have to memorise long dialogues but you have to be very sharp in the terms of your reflexes, body language and facial expressions. You need to emote and react appropriately to the responses of the other characters.”

He holds silent comedy in high esteem. “Silent comedy is an art. There are various kinds of painting- like abstract art, popular painting or a portrait. Every painting has its own space. Similarly every kind of comedy has its own identity.”

Regarding other silent comedies he is of the opinion, “I have watched a lot of Chaplin but hardly any Laurel and Hardy silent movies. My favourite Chaplin movie is The Great Dictator. I have watched the Mr Bean series with my kids- I found it very interesting.”

He feels that Chintu Ban Gaya Gentleman is simpler than Gutur Gu 2. “Chintu… is a good serial but we have a lot of content plus special effects. We are a bigger team and are doing a better job.”

This talented actor, who has done films in the past, will be seen on Chor Chor Super Chor which will be released on 2 August 2013 and Ab Tak Chhappan Part 2 which is slated for a 2014 release. He added, “I will be playing Shakuni on a yet to be titled show on the upcoming Epic Channel which is to screen just historical and mythological content.”

We wish the actor all the best for all his endeavours!!!
