Ruk Jana Nahin 13th July 2012 Written Update by lashy

University
A very perplexed Indu is leaning over the parapet wall of the university, his rough appeal only intensified by the black kurta that he was sporting. Having mused on what Yogi and Abhimanyu had just told him, Indu then brushes them off ‘Are you mad? Why will a mother NOT want her daughter to contest the elections…you’re probably confused’
However, Abhimanyu reiterates what he’d overheard at his place – Veena was very clear in her demands of NOT wanting Sanchi to contest the elections.
Slapping the concrete wall in astonishment, Indu strolls around the terrace as he questions his friends ‘Why will a mother go against her own daughter?’
Just as the young men are about to delve into the issue, they catch two other students discussing amongst themselves about Veena’s unexpected appearance that morning. Walking past Indu’s group, the engrossed students debate on whether they should listen to Veena’s words or still follow their heart and vote for Sanchi.

Startled by the information he’d just come across, Indu tries appraising the situation ‘Sasuma came to college…and instigated the students against her own daughter…there is something goin on.. some problem…I have to find out what it is…what is all this…’

At the library, Sanchi assures Swetha that she’d try retrieving her money from Dasrath Shukla once the elections were over. Just then Mehek barges into the library and interrupts Sanchi’s peaceful disposition. Dragging her friend along, Mehek leads her to the podium where Indu was adressing a large group of students.
‘Both you and I respect Sanchi ji’s mother…however, her mother herself attests to the fact that her daughter is not capable enough for this post or position…so, use your own intelligence and your own sense of judgement…the winning candidate should be one who is capable of doing something for this university…whoever wins – be it I or Sanchi Mathur …the actual winners should be ‘YOU’, the students and the college!’

Hearing Indu’s words, Sanchi is appalled – she is under the impression that Indu was needlessly lying and sullying the name of her mother. Walking up to Indu, she pulls him aside and takes him to task for blabbing nonsense about her mother.

‘Why are you snapping at me?’ He interrupts her tirade calmly ‘All this was mentioned by your mother herself…she’d come to the campus earlier…and I’m just trying to clarify the truth to the students’
‘Clarify the truth or influence them wrongly?’ Sanchi retorts ‘I know all about you and your disgusting approach…you are using my mother’s name to provoke the students and spread hatred against me’
While Indu becomes increasingly incensed by her misunderstood claims, Sanchi continues harshly ‘You think you’ll win the elections by using these tactics…wait and watch…you’ll only lose…’
‘Enough’ he shouts finally, venting out all of his frustrations ‘Not a word more…not a word more…’ he pauses ‘I’m trying to help you out here… and you…’ he then angrily darts a few glimpses around ‘Anyway, this wrong impression you have of me…I’ll have to set it straight…come with me…’ with Sanchi following him closely, he walks towards the crowd and addresses them ‘Please tell Sanchi Mathur what happened this morning…why her mother had come and all that transpired after…’

The students then jointly proceed to confirm Indu’s statements, leaving Sanchi nothing less than shocked and hurt. Adding fuel to her fire, Abhimanyu also steps forth and lets her know of how her mother had visited his home that morning with the sole intention of impeding Sanchi’s political aspirations.
‘Happy? Satisfied?’ Indu eventually yells at his wife ‘Now go and ask your mother why she has no trust in you…this is the truth…it’s bitter…but it’s still the truth’

‘Are you my mother or my enemy?’ Sanchi bawls, as she vehemently storms into the hall of her cosy home ‘You went to my college and provoked the students against me? Did you not once think about the consequences of your actions?’
Unmoved by her daughter’s shaken state, Veena replies, the tone in her voice adamant ‘I don’t care about the consequences…I will NOT let you fight these elections…and for that I could go to any length!’
Sanchi is dumbfounded.
When the emotional girl asks her mother why she was subjecting her to this treatment, an animated Veena answers ‘Indu has already spoiled our reputation and now you’re ruining any remaining honour we have by standing in these elections.’ she pauses furiously ‘This society views you as a married woman who’s been abandoned by her husband…and now if you fight the elections against your husband…this community will only brandish you as a characterless person!’
Briefly mellowing the wrath in her tone, Veena walks up to Sanchi. Putting a hand on her shoulder supportively, the concerned mother admits ‘You are a girl…I cannot silently step back and watch people commenting on your honour…I’ll die, before something like that happens…I only wish well for you in all of this…that’s why I did all this…so that you lose the elections and our honour remains untarnished…I don’t want you defamed’
‘You must be the first mother who wants her own victory, while watching her daughter defeated!’ the pained girl confesses ‘I don’t know why you’re doing all this..and who’s influenced you…I understand your pain and your love ma…but your thoughts are wrong…’ she then concludes her remarks by announcing her resolute opinion in the matter ‘Ma! I WILL fight the elections tomorrow, whether you are with me or not!’

That night…
A fretful Sanchi is dwelling on her mother’s bewildering stance, when she gets a call from professor Janardhan – He informs her that the details in her nomination form were incorrect and that her current form had therefore been rejected. Sanchi is horrified at how something like that could happen.
Having let her in on the truth, the professor then advices the girl that the only way out of the quandary was for her to report to the office next morning before 10 am in order to submit a new form ‘If you fail to do so, the election committee will announce Indu Singh as the unopposed president of the student union… and you shall not even be able to challenge this decision of the committee…’ he warns her.
‘This must surely be Indu Singh’s scheme…’ Sanchi concludes ‘He never wanted me standing in these elections at all…anyway, I’ll be there before 10…and submit the form and win the elections too’ she vows irately
Unbeknown to Sanchi, her annoyed mother had overheard the entire conversation!

Next morning…
A chirpy Sanchi is dressing up – looking forward to reaching college in time, submitting a new form and winning the elections, of course!
However, just as Sanchi is about make her departure, her mother blocks her way in an attempt to stop her. The mother-daughter duo have a brief altercation. However, when Veena’s forceful tugging of her arm could not stop the girl, how could a few strict words curb her enthusiasm. Sanchi dismisses her mother’s fears and relentlessly walks out of the house.
Watching Sanchi’s stubborn departure, Veena becomes desperate and comes up with a hasty plan that could hinder her possibilities at the upcoming elections.

Just as the spirited girl takes a few steps towards her cycle, she hears her mother’s loud wails of anguish. Basically, Veena was acting like she’d slipped down the steps of the porch.
Alarmed at the sight of her fallen mother pleading for assistance, Sanchi momentarily drops everything that was on her mind and rushes back. Attending to her supposedly injured parent, Sanchi helps her into the house and darts off to get the lady some warm water.

Meanwhile, keeping a close watch on the ticking clock, Veena hopes to be able to delay her daughter as far as she could. While a tensed Sanchi proceeds to massage her mother, she remains wholly aware of how she was running short of time. Though comforting and assisting her mother, the girl hurls many-a-worried glance at the clock while doing so.
Similarly headstrong, the mother continues to put up a drastic drama of pain and injury in her desire to ensure that her plot to delay her daughter remained successful.

At the office, Janardhan worriedly casts a few glimpses at the time – it was past 9:30 and Sanchi had not yet arrived.

Over time, Sanchi and Veena have an argument about the lady taking a pain killer. Darting yet another anxious glance at the clock, Sanchi does not know how to deal with the situation – she was desperate to get to college and submit the form on time, but then she could not abandon her injured mother in that state either.
Able to discern what her daughter was contemplating, Veena then requests her help in climbing upstairs, hoping that it would buy her more time.
Just as the tensed Sanchi is unwillingly about to follow her mother’s instructions, she catches her mother’s lie – Veena had forgotten that she’d originally indicated her right leg to be injured. Instead, she was now clutching her left leg!

Striding into the office in his chocolate brown kurta, Indu enquires about the latest developments pertaining to Sanchi that he’d just heard of.
Suspecting that it was indeed Indu who had a hand behind all of this, Janardhan gives him a sarcastic reply. Nevertheless, not minding the professor’s tone, Indu remains intrigued about his wife’s prospects at fighting the election and stares at the clock agitatedly.

Now convinced that her mother had only been putting up an act to delay her, Sanchi swiftly joins her mother in the drama. Shrieking that her mother’s leg had now thoroughly swollen, Sanchi lets her know that she had to run and summon a doctor as soon as she could. Leaving behind an unnerved mother, Sanchi literally runs off outside the door and fetches her cycle.
Trying to keep up with her nimble daughter, Veena too rushes outside the bedroom and the main door to stop her. However, being no match for Sanchi’s agility, the mother is left with little option but to watch the diminishing silhouette of Sanchi cycling away.
Hoping that her efforts bear fruit, Veena silently prays to God hoping that Sanchi is not allowed to contest the elections.

University Office
It was now nearly 9:45.
Indu is standing in the office, finding himself as curious as Janardhan about the whereabouts of his wife. Pacing around the room, he wonders why she hadn’t turned up yet. If she troubled him much with his presence, she managed to trouble him as much with her absence too!
Becoming unnerved by the passage of time, he jokes with his friends ‘All through, she’s been so enthusiastic about contesting the elections…making tall claims…and now when she needs to be here, she’s not here’ despite jesting so, the concern in the voice of the young ruffian is far from hidden.

Soon after, Mehek and Swetha enter the office and are instantly questioned by Janardhan if they had any information about the reason for Sanchi’s delay. However, the girls are as ignorant about the entire scenario as the remaining members present.
It was now nearly 10. Apprehensive, Mehek repeatedly tries contacting Sanchi through her phone, but remains unsuccessful. The loyal friend then requests professor Janardhan to be patient for a few minutes and allow Sanchi some leeway.
However, the professor sternly refuses to do so and instructs his clerk to make a formal closure to the nomination submissions.
Indu watches the entire development silently – the wariness in his eyes evident.

PRECAP: It was election time! Students are queuing to place their votes. However, a clamour soon develops between two boys, which then turns into a brawl – (I think) Indu’s group take advantage of the fight outside to steal the ballot boxes.
